REGEN by Vicunha

A pioneer in Brazil in utilizing regenerative cotton, Vicunha proudly stands as the first company to incorporate locally sourced and traceable cotton from regenerative farms into its denim fabrics manufactured in the country. These fabrics are crafted using the most environmentally conscious methods in our plants in Northeastern region.

Regenerate
to build a permanently sustainable future

Vicunha’s commitment to the "Regen by Vicunha" project is an important step towards a more sustainable future. Our aim is to increasingly and consistently integrate regenerative cotton into our Denim & Denim Colour portfolio, thus fostering sustainability on a broader scale.

The initiative relies on multiple actions to regenerate entire ecosystems, safeguard the health of the land and support local communities.

REGENERATING
THE PATH

Regenerative cotton:
a shift to Holistic Farming practices

Vicunha is the first Brazilian denim manufacturer to lean on regenerative cotton strategy as a comprehensive approach to promote sustainability across the entire production chain.

In addition to fostering a regenerative mindset in the domestic denim market, this movement also supports holistic farming practices that enhance soil organic matter, promote biodiversity, capture CO2, and improve water and energy management.

HIGHLIGHTS

Over 160,000 hectares of preserved native vegetation areas

A comprehensive program for treating effluents and managing waste

Commitment to implement regenerative agriculture across all the production areas by 2030

Eight years of implementing regenerative agriculture, with science as the foundation for all actions

Efficient use of land: achieving two harvests within the same calendar year

Use of cover crops to protect the soil and promote diversification of plant materials:

increases nutrients, organic matter in the soil, the potential for water absorption and biological activity, maximizing carbon sequestration.

Direct planting across 100% of the areas: eliminates soil disturbance, improves soil biology, and enhances organic matter and nutrient cycling.

In 2022, 100% of the sampled regenerative area had higher species richness and functionality, compared to the cerrado areas (Scheffer’s Sustainability Report 2022)

Natural fertilizer and crop protection strategies: reducing chemical use through investment in natural sources, technology, and research

Use polysulfate and thermophosphate as natural fertilizers, and production of biological inputs in its own Laboratory and Industry of Biological Resources, located in the Três Lagoas Production Unit, in Sapezal (MT)

Consolidated practices related to biodiversity:

  • a) All soils exhibit greater biodiversity than a natural cerrado area in the same region
  • b) Assessment of soil meso- and macrofauna biodiversity
  • c) Earthworm population survey
  • d) Study of wild fauna
  • e) Survey of natural enemies
  • f) Beekeeping initiatives

VICUNHA: NATURALLY BORN ON THE PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability

Founded in 1967, Vicunha played a leading role in spreading mindful practices across Brazil’s denim culture.

Vicunha is a Brazilian multinational with production unities in Brazil, Argentina, and Ecuador, and multiple operations across Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

We pioneered denim manufacturing in the Northeast region and encouraged denim hubs across the country, making Brazil a global benchmark in this industry.

In our plants, we design and adopt ingenious technologies to re-use water and reduce water consumption from outside our recycling system.

Vicunha drives social change in every location where it operates. Our social initiatives support small entrepreneurs, employees, and society as a whole.

OUR NUMBERS

7000 tons of recovered and recycled cotton per year

160 million liters of water saved per year

48% of the energy we consume comes from renewable sources

4500 customers in +20 countries

Water reduction
(VSA Pacajus)

We have carried out a project to reuse wastewater from the sewage treatment plant in the city of Horizonte. This project produces reuse water for our Pacajus unit and surrounding companies, with an estimated 95% reduction in water consumption.

Projeto Pescar

We provide training opportunities for young people in socially vulnerable situations in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. Since 2004, have had 19 training programs, completed by 447 young people, who also had the opportunity to join an internship program at Vicunha.
